Forres Highland Games 2006

This year our Highland Games Secretary Mike Scott, took on the role of Highland Games Chieftain. Over the years this honour has been awarded to individuals who have supported our Games over a number of years, and there was no one more deserving than our extremely hard working Secretary Mike Scott.
Mike has been involved with Forres Highland Games for many years as a competitor, Official and Secretary. Indeed Mike has now been Secretary of the Highland Games for the past 24 years.
Mike’s early involvement on Games day began in 1957 where he competed on the track. This was just the beginning of a running career that would span the next three decades with Forres Harriers.
Throughout the summer Months you will see Mike at many of the local Highland Games, in an official capacity as a Judge during the Heavyweight competitions.
Mike lead the Pipe Bands onto the Game’s Field at the opening ceremony and he got to see some of the action during the day for the first time in 24 years! Mike enjoyed his day and it will be normal service in the Secretaries Tent next year.
Once again we were blessed with favourable weather conditions, with only a slight shower of rain mid way through the proceedings (It wouldn't be a Games day without it!). There was a fantastic turnout of Pipe Bands and along with the Brass Band of The Royal Regiment Of Scotland (Highland Brigade), they certainly added to the atmosphere on the day. Towie Pipe Band won the two awards on the day; for being the best turned out Band along with the best Marching Band.
The events on the Athletics Track were as competitive as ever and it was pleasing to see an increase in the number of competitors lining up on the Start Line of the various races.
Heavy Weight Athlete Graeme Allan of Elgin was once again in record breaking form, setting a new Ground Record for the 28lb Weight for Distance, the new mark being set at 22.92 Metres.
In the Tug O War competition, two old rivals went head to head in the final, with Elgin just getting the better of Cawdor on this occasion.
The Highland Dancing once again provided the spectators with a traditional flavour of what a Highland Games is all about with the competition being as fierce as ever. For the first time in a number of years the title of best overall dancer was shared between two dancers; Stephanie Duthie of Fraserburgh and Laura Raeburn of Huntly.
